This 23-year-old has helped dozens of students get into Yale University so far
The United States is home to the Ivy League— a group of eight elite universities including Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. Competition for these schools is fierce, with less than 10% of students receiving offers of admission. This rate is probably much lowe r for Chinese students, when you consider that Yale and Harvard are under investigation or being sued for discriminating against Asian applicants, and that many schools require standardized testing such as the SAT, which is not available to take in mainlan d China (students must travel to Hong Kong). Admissions rates are dropping — this year, not a single student from Hong Kong or mainland China was admitted early to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
However, there is hope for anx ious parents who want the best for their children: many parents currently seek out the help of private education consultants who can help their children navigate the complicated application process, from essays and interviews to meaningful afterschool acti vities. The success rate of Hong-Kong-based consultancies is not very high, however — for example, The Edge Learning Center, Arch Education, and Capstone Prep Education only get about three-quarters of their students into one of their top school choices ( 73 %, 70%, and 80% respectively). They will soon be facing competition, however, from Command Education, a consultancy with an incredible 96% success rate that is expanding rapidly into the Asian market.
Command Education was founded while its CEO, Christo pher Rim, was an undergraduate student at Yale University. As the only person from his high school to get accepted to Yale in decades, many of his classmates began coming to him for advice. Their success led to the founding of the company, which now has ov er a dozen employees and operates out of two offices in Manhattan, operates out of two offices in Manhattan, one on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park and the second a few blocks away, across from Bloomingdale’s. To Rim, getting into the Ivy League isn’ t about perfect grades and test scores — in fact, he was an average student. It was his work founding his own nonprofit which helped him get into Yale — the organization spread its message of a more positive school environment to over 4 million students an d gained the attention of popstar Lady Gaga, who invited Rim to serve on her foundation’s advisory board. That sort of high school activity is sure to stand out to admissions officers, and Rim now helps other students follow in his footsteps. Using the pri nciples of EQ, or emotional intelligence, that he learned at Yale, he and his team of mentors (all under 25 and graduates of Ivy League or Top 10 schools) help motivate and inspire students to discover what they’re truly passionate about. Then, Command Edu cation helps them gain prestigious internships with Ivy League professors, found nonprofits where they are invited to speak at the UN or appear on television, and start other clubs and businesses that align with their passions, help them make a difference in their communities, and will strengthen their college applications.
Although the company is based in New York City, they work with students all over the world. This year, a majority of their international students have already been accepted to Ivy Leagu e schools. The company is well-suited to working with the specific issues Chinese students face when applying to US colleges — of Command Education’s current students, 71% are of Asian descent and 75% grew up speaking a language other than English. Command Education was only founded a few years ago, but their unique approach and strong success rate have lead to rapid growth, and the company plans to officially expand into the Chinese market by hosting a lecture with speakers from Yale and Columbia Universit ies at the American Club Hong Kong this March.
